Oskar Schindlers Factory Tour is an amazing opportunity to see one of the most important and most interesting places in Krakow. Probably, this place would remain known only to Krakow’s inhabitants and enthusiasts of the history of World War II, if not for Steven Spielberg’s famous film “Schindler’s List“, shot in 1993, which made the history of the factory and its owner famous all over the world.
The factory in Krakow’s Podgórze district was founded in 1937 by three Jewish entrepreneurs. At the outbreak of the war, a German entrepreneur, Oskar Schindler, took over the declining production plant and established the German Enamel Factory (the so-called enamel factory) here. It operated until 1945 and produced enamelled dishes, and with time scales and igniters for artillery and airplane missiles. Initially, Oskar Schindler employed mainly Poles in the production process, but after the establishment of the Krakow ghetto he started to employ Jews on a large scale. After the liquidation of the ghetto, Schindler established a sub-camp of the Płaszow labor camp in the factory, and the Jews employed there lived next to the factory, and not in the camp, where living conditions were much more difficult.
The museum’s exhibitions are mostly interactive. Visitors usually spend about 1.5 hours at the Schindler’s Museum. There is also a special route prepared for wheelchair users. However, this applies only to private sightseeing tours. Visitors use elevators to enter the salt mine and the route is slightly shorter than the standard tourist route.
